A gang of al-Qa'ida inspired terrorists who plotted attacks in the UK, including a bomb at the London Stock Exchange, received jail sentences totalling almost a century yesterday at Woolwich Crown Court, London.

The severest penalty went to Abdul Miah, 25, who was part of the Stock Exchange plot. He was sentenced to 16 years and 10 months.

Miah, along with his brother Gurukanth Desai, 30, and Mohammed Chowdhury, 22, and Shah Rahman, 28, admitted intending to commit an act of terrorism. Yesterday Chowdhury, described as the "lynchpin" of the gang, was jailed for 13 years and eight months while Rahman and Desai were given 12 years each.

Three of their accomplices from Stoke-on-Trent, who admitted attending meetings to plan attacks and fund-raising to send men to terror training camps, were given indeterminate sentences, with minimum terms of eight years to eight years and 10 months. Omar Latif, 28, was jailed for 10 years and four months after pleading guilty to attending meetings at which terrorist attacks were discussed while Mohibur Rahman, 28, was sentenced to five years for owning copies of a terrorist magazine.
