Police were investigating today after a badly burned body was found by firefighters tackling a blaze in a seaside town.

The body was recovered by members of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service after they extinguished a blaze in a metal shed at the rear of a house in Percival Road, Eastbourne, at around 3.30pm yesterday.

Detectives from Sussex Police's major crime branch are investigating the cause of the fire and trying to establish the identity of the victim, whose gender is not yet known.

Detective Chief Inspector Trevor Bowles, who is leading the inquiry, said: "I am trying to establish the circumstances that led to this tragic incident.

"The exact series of events surrounding the death of this person is at the moment unclear. The body is badly burnt and I am unable to confirm the gender of the victim at this time.

"I am keen to hear from anyone who feels they can help with this investigation. I appeal to the community of Hampden Park for anyone who might have any information regarding this dreadful incident to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 70 999, quoting Operation Appleton, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
