A Nigerian woman in Belfast said she has been left "terrified" after a hatchet was thrown through her living room window, in what she believes to be a racist attack.

Adenike Yisa was at home in the Sandy Row area with her two children, when she heard a loud noise at 2am this morning.

She said the hatchet had smashed through the window of her living room.

No-one was injured in the incident, which police are treating as a hate crime.

“I was really, really upset. I have never been in that situation in my life. I only moved into that house about a year ago and never had any trouble,” Miss Yisa told the BBC.

“When I heard the noise I thought it was a shot then I saw the axe or hatchet and the big hole in my window. I was screaming at the top of my voice and shaking like a leaf. Luckily my children were in their rooms.

“I didn't see whoever did this, but I think it was because of the colour of my skin.”

Police are appealing for information about the incident.
