The first female Deputy President of the Supreme Court has been announced with the appointment of Baroness Hale of Richmond.
Lady Hale, an outspoken advocate of greater diversity in the judiciary as well as equal rights, will take over the post on Friday upon the retirement of Lord Hope.
The 68-year-old became the first woman Law Lord in 2004 and the Supreme Court’s only female justice following its establishment five years later.
An expert in Family and Social Welfare Law, she has played a major role in key reforms, particularly relating to legislation affecting children and domestic violence victims.
“It is an honour and a privilege to have been chosen to follow Lord Hope, who has made such a success of the role in the transition from the House of Lords to the Supreme Court. I look forward to continuing and building upon the work which he has done to establish this great new institution in our national life,” Lady Hale said.
