Arsenal player arrested as third star wins court order

Jack Wilshere, the England and Arsenal footballer, has been arrested after a "fracas" which left a woman with a broken elbow.

The fight erupted in the early hours of Sunday while the 18-year-old midfielder was in west London celebrating his team's Premier League victory against Blackburn, it is believed.

After he was bailed, Wilshere's spokesman said the footballer had just tried to calm the situation: "The police have made it very clear that he is an important witness to the incident and played the role of peacemaker and is unlikely to face any charges as a result."

Police were called to Kensington High Street at 2.45am and found a woman with a broken and dislocated elbow and a man with a facial injury.

They said they later stopped a vehicle and arrested four men, two aged 18 and two aged 21, on suspicion of assault, who were taken to a west London police station and bailed to return in mid-October, pending further inquiries.

The news comes as a third England footballer has won an injunction banning the reporting of allegations about his private life. The gagging order was granted on Saturday by the on-duty High Court judge, Mr Justice Kenneth Parker. Two other international players have been granted a similar order in recent weeks.

Concern has mounted about the use of injunctions to stop the reporting of potentially embarrassing revelations after Chelsea captain John Terry and Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie both successfully prevented reporting of their private lives earlier this year.

Terry's order was later repealed and the judge said he believed his "real concern" was the effect the publication of the story would have on his sponsorship deals rather than his privacy.
