Armed siege 'linked to PC killing'
Police were involved in an armed siege last night that was believed to be linked to the shooting of an officer in Bradford last month.
Local residents were evacuated from homes in the Maindee area of Newport, south Wales "for their own safety" and two schools were to remain closed today.
Armed officers had yesterday tried to make contact with a man wanted for questioning in connection with firearms offences.
Police forces in Wales and Yorkshire have refused to comment on suggestions the operation is linked to the investigation into the shooting of PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Gwent Police spokeswoman Heather Jones said: "We cannot confirm or deny any reports linking the siege with the shooting in West Yorkshire."
A helicopter has been circling the area and a police scientific investigation lorry is in the area.
West Yorkshire Police are searching for 24-year-old Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah and 25-year-old Mustaf Jamma in connection with PC Beshenivsky's murder.
