Northumbria Police will lose 450 civilian posts in the face of Government budget cuts, Chief Constable Sue Sim said today.

The top officer said the North East force expects to lose £34 million from its funding as a result of the spending review.

She said no police officers would be lost and as many civilian posts as possible would be lost by natural turnover.

But union leaders condemned the move which they said would make streets in the area less safe.
