The company confirmed last night that David Adams, 43, a management consultant, had been shot twice in the leg. One bullet passed through the limb and the other was embedded in his calf. He was operated on at the American Hospital in Istanbul last night but was said to be not seriously injured. A spokesman for the firm said that at 3.30pm Istanbul time yesterday, two men walked into the office asking for Chris Howell, a member of the administration team sorting out legal disputes caused by the collapse of the business empire run by Asil Nadir.
They were told to leave and a few minutes later Mr Adams, who has no connection with the investigation, emerged from the building. He was shot twice from behind, and was taken to hospital, where he was said to be in good spirits.
The spokesman said that the firm believed the two men were responsible but it was a case of mistaken identity. Mr Adams, who is based in London, has worked in Turkey since October 1993 and was working on a computer system for a big Turkish company.
Chris Howell had been attacked in June outside his flat in Istanbul, and needed 20 stitches to a head wound.
In Cyprus, the lawyer employed by Coopers & Lybrand has also had his car firebombed and other officials working with the administrators have reported voodoo- style warnings using headless chickens and dead cats.
The spokesman said: 'We are waiting to hear what the doctors tell us and we will be talking to the Turkish authorities and the British embassy in order to review the security needs of all of our staff working out here.'
