From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. A British national kidnapped by gunmen in Nigeria has been released, the British High Commission have confirmed.

The man was attacked upon his arrival in the country in his four-wheel drive, after leaving Nigeria's Lagos airport international terminal on 16 July.

A statement from the British High Commission said: “We can confirm the release of a British national today in Nigeria, following his abduction on 16 July.” It gave no further details.

The man's Nigerian driver was shot in the hand by gunmen during the incident, Reuters reported.

Kidnappings of foreigners and Nigerians who are believed to be wealthy are becoming increasingly. Ransoms are often demanded in exchange for their return.

It is not known if a ransom was paid to secure the man's release.
