Ashdown urges United Nations action in Bosnia
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.URGENT United Nations action is needed to safeguard electricity supplies in central Bosnia and reopen the airport at Tuzla, Paddy Ashdown, the Liberal Democrat leader, warned yesterday after his fifth visit to the war- torn region.
Failure to act risked an 'explosion of anger' against UN troops and aid workers, whose reputation was already undergoing a 'catastrophic decline', Mr Ashdown said on his return to Westminster. UN soldiers and convoys were regularly shot at and stoned. Blocking of humanitarian convoys meant 1.5 million people in central Bosnia only received 10 per cent of their basic needs.
Mr Ashdown urged John Major to make the provision of vital supplies to the central Bosnian Kakanj power station a test case under the Geneva agreement on the free passage of convoys. The station will run out of acid for keeping boilers clean in 20 days because of Serb and Croat blockades.
