From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Two armed robbers who shot a police officer with a machinegun were each jailed for a total of 18 years at the Old Bailey yesterday.

Michael Stubbs, a Flying Squad sergeant, was in a police car chasing Steven Farrer and Anthony Pendrigh when he was hit in the head by a ricocheting bullet.

Nineteen rounds were fired at the police car pursuing Farrer and Pendrigh after a pounds 17,000 raid on a Security Express van in Blackfen, south London, last August.

Sgt Stubbs was off work for six months after the shooting.

Farrer, 25, from Greenwich and Pendrigh, 26 from Eltham, both south London, denied charges of attempted murder, but admitted using the machinegun to resist arrest. They also pleaded guilty to robbing Security Express of pounds 17,000, and other firearms charges.

They were jailed for 12 years for robbery and six years concurrent for possession of firearms. They were sentenced to a further six years for having the machine gun with intent to resist arrest.
