Your support makes all the difference.Watermans continues its series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of India's independence, with a rare opportunity to see the work of celebrated environmental artist, Nek Chand. Sculptures from The Rock Garden of Chandigarh features some of the thousands of sculptures, made from waste materials, which inhabit the 25-acre north Indian kingdom. Nek Chand's labour of love began 37 years ago when he started to clear a little patch of jungle. Working at night, by the light of burning tyres, and in total secrecy for fear of the authorities, the project spiralled into one of the modern wonders of the world. Nek Chand transported rubbish from the city's tips on the back of his bike: old bike saddles became animal parts, forks were transformed into legs. For the areas of mosaics, he used broken crockery, tiles and even whole bathrooms. The trade in house clearances is bound to take an upturn in Brentford over the next few months.
