Twyford Down near Winchester is scarred with a huge cutting through the chalk, and tarmac laying for the M3 has begun. But protests continue. Yesterday about 100 mostly local people marched on to the site, police making no effort to stop them. They chanted, sang and laid lumps of coal to form a symbolic accident blackspot on the chalk in their version of new-year 'first footing'.
