Murray rises above Federer in rankings

Andy Murray beat Spain’s David Ferrer 7-5 6-4 yesterday to win the Shanghai Masters and move above Roger Federer to become world No 3. The trophy was the Scot’s third title in as many weeks, following victories in the Japan and Thailand Opens. MORE

Young gun Lewis sweeps to victory

Tom Lewis has won the Portugal Masters, in just his third event as a pro. The 20-year-old Englishman birdied five of the last seven holes to finish two clear. “This is one of the great performances in the history of the European tour,” said former Tour winner Mark Roe. MORE

Vettel win secures constructors’ title

Sebastian Vettel won his 10th race of the season in Korea to earn Red Bull their second consecutive constructors’ championship. The German blazed away from Lewis Hamilton then coasted home, with the Briton holding off Mark Webber to take second. MORE

FA to investigate racism claims

The Football Association is to launch an investigation into Patrice Evra’s claims that Liverpool forward Luis Suarez racially abused him during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday. The Uruguayan denies the claims. MORE

All Blacks storm past Australia

New Zealand secured their place in next weekend’s final by beating Australia 20-6 at Eden Park. Ma’a Nonu’s try and four penalties from PiriWeepu helped the All Blacks secure a date with France, and the chance to end their 24-year wait to lift the trophy. MORE

Warburton hit with three-week ban

Wales captain Sam Warburton has been banned for three weeks for the tackle on France’s Vincent Clerc that resulted in his controversial dismissal during Saturday’s semi-final defeat to France. The offence was judged to be in the “mid-range” category. MORE

Arsenal indebted to Van Persie while Spurs let lead slip

Arsenal recorded just their third league victory of the season as they secured a nervy 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates. Robin van Persie opened the scoring after just 29 seconds before former Arsenal midfielder Sebastian Larsson equalised. Van Persie added a second eight minutes from time to take Arsenal into the top half of the table. Elsewhere yesterday, Tottenham twice surrendered the lead to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United, while West Bromwich overcame Wolves 2-0 at the Hawthorns. MORE
