Isinbayeva fires Russian crowd
Yelena Isinbayeva gave the Moscow crowd something to cheer at the Luzhniki Stadium, the home favourite winning pole vault gold at the World Championships. The 31-year-old, who also won the title in 2005 and 2007, regained her crown with a jump of 4.89m, but failed in her attempt to set a new world record. MORE
Johnson-Thompson out of the medals
A personal best of 6,449 points was still not enough to earn Katarina Johnson-Thompson a medal in the heptathlon at the World Championships. The Briton finished fifth, 28 points off bronze, after coming second in her 800m heat. The Ukrainian Ganna Melnichenko took the gold. MORE
Shakes-Drayton in as Greene goes out
There was mixed news for Great Britain in the 400m hurdles, Perri Shakes-Drayton storming into the World Championships final of the women’s event after winning her heat in 53.92sec, with Eilidh Child also qualifying. Defending men’s champion Dai Greene could only finish fifth and went out, having struggled with a calf injury. MORE
Gerrard confident Rooney can leave troubles at home
England captain Steven Gerrard expects Wayne Rooney to leave his club worries behind him when he features in tonight’s friendly with Scotland at Wembley. The Manchester United forward, right, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford all summer, and has barely featured in manager David Moyes’ pre-season plans as he attempts to force a move to Chelsea. “There is a lot of attention on him at the moment because of his club situation,” Gerrard said. “But he has got the chance to get some much-needed minutes under his belt and to play for England, which will be a release for him if you like. I’ve got no doubts Wayne can play well and be a key factor.” MORE

England Under-21s, under the temporary guidance of Roy Hodgson’, thrashed Scotland 6-0 at Bramall Lane last night, with six different players finding the net. Nathan Redmond and Ross Barkley, both scorers, particularly impressed, as England found the net four times in 11 minutes after the interval. MORE
