Roy Hodgson announced that he will make nine changes to the team which lost to Italy and Uruguay for today’s final World Cup game against Costa Rica, with Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere all starting the game in Belo Horizonte.
The England boss took the unusual step of announcing his team in its entirety at his official pre-match press conference at the stadium, with only Daniel Sturridge and Gary Cahill remaining from the team that lost the two opening games. To judge by Hodgson’s comments, the team will line up in a different formation, 4-3-3, with Frank Lampard playing behind Wilshere and James Milner. MORE
Ronaldo’s Portugal on brink of exit
Despite earning a last-gasp draw with the United States on Sunday evening, Portugal are close to crashing out. To reach the second stage, they need to defeat Ghana in Brasilia on Thursday, hope Germany beat the United States at the same time, and achieve at least a five-goal swing in goal difference. MORE
Dutch defeat Chile to top group
The Netherlands finished top of Group B after beating Chile 2-0 in Sao Paulo. Norwich’s Leroy Fer headed home in the 77th minute before Memphis Depay scored in injury time for Louis van Gaal’s side, who were without suspended Robin van Persie. Defending champions Spain avoided finishing their campaign bottom of Group B as they beat Australia 3-0 in Curitiba. David Villa, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata all found the net for Vicente del Bosque’s much-changed team, as they prevented suffering a third straight loss for the first time since 1991. MORE
Murray happy with comfortable win
Andy Murray was happy with his 6-1 6-4 7-5 first-round Wimbledon victory over David Goffin. “I played very well,” said Murray, after he had walked on to Centre Court to a standing ovation. “I hit the ball very well. I hit the ball clean from the beginning of the match.” MORE
England face series loss after collapse
England are heading for a first home series defeat by Sri Lanka after a dire fourth day of the second Test. Chasing 350 to win, Peter Moores’ side slumped to 57-5 as Dhammika Prasad tore through the top order, taking an impressive 4-15, including Alastair Cook for 16. MORE
Stosur suffers shock defeat
Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur crashed out on the opening day of Wimbledon, falling 6-3 6-4 to unseeded Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. But fellow Australians Marinko Matosevic and Bernard Tomic both progressed. MORE
Djokovic eases into second round
Top seed Novak Djokovic eased into the Wimbledon second round as the 2011 champion overcame world No 56 Andrey Golubev, of Kazakhstan, 6-0 6-1 6-4. Tomas Berdych and Queen’s Club champion Grigor Dimitrov also progressed.
Finch shines with ton for Yorkshire
Aaron Finch, the Australian batsman of Twenty20 reknown, struck his first century in Championship cricket as leaders Yorkshire secured maximum bonus points and a 194-run lead over Warwickshire at Edgbaston, after closing on 422.
Broady wins but five Brits crash out
Britain’s Naomi Broady beat Timea Babos 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 to achieve her first Wimbledon success at the third attempt. But Brits Johanna Konta, James Ward, Dan Cox, Dan Evans and Kyle Edmund went out. MORE
