England face India in the fourth ODI in Birmingham hoping to bounce back from two heavy defeats. “We’re trying to find a balance,” said England coach Peter Moores. “To do that we’ve had quite a lot of change and we’ve got to be able to identify the right people in the right slots to play a brand of cricket that players feel they can deliver and be successful against the best teams.”
Contador declares aim to win in Spain
Alberto Contador, who fractured a shin bone at the Tour de France in July, said he had changed his mind and would now be targeting victory in the Tour of Spain. A late attack in Sunday’s ninth stage lifted him to second overall. “I am now able to say I will try to win the Vuelta,” he said.
Liverpool may sign Valdes next month
Liverpool are likely to sign former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes next month, if initial talks come to fruition. He is a free agent after his release from Barcelona and can join outside the transfer window, but it depends on his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.
Henderson urges players to step up
Jordan Henderson feels the new generation of England players must now show their quality. “It is for the younger lads to step up,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s friendly against Norway. “They have to show just what they have to offer and what they have to give for the team.”
Hull land £10m Hernandez
Hull City completed the club-record signing of Uruguay striker Abel Hernandez for £10m, and midfielder Mohamed Diamé for around £3.5m. Both players have agreed three-year deals with the Tigers, with Hernandez having the option of extending for a fourth.
Captains set to pick wild cards
The Ryder Cup captains, Europe’s Paul McGinley and American Tom Watson, both select their wild card picks today. Scot Stephen Gallacher is a favourite to be picked for Europe, after he fell just short of automatic qualification. The 39-year-old required a top-two finish at the weekend’s Italian Open but came third. Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald are also options for Europe, while Hunter Mahan is among the contenders for the US.
Farrell eager for Saracens success
Saracens fly-half Owen Farrell is relishing the new season, after losing two finals in eight days to end last season trophyless. Farrell, who hopes to be fit this weekend after his knee injury, said: “I think the main thing is to make sure we get better, and are still evolving as a team.”
