A pitiful showing from England left the one-day series with Sri Lanka level at 1-1 with three matches to play. Chasing 257 for victory in Durham, Alastair Cook’s side were bowled out for just 99, with only Ian Bell (12) and Eoin Morgan (40) reaching double figures.
Williams sisters through in Paris
Venus and Serena Williams both made it through to the second round as the French Open got under way in Paris. Venus beat 2013 junior champion Belinda Bencic 6-4 6-1, while defending champion Serena overcame Alizé Lim 6-2 6-1.
Hamilton denied by Rosberg
Nico Rosberg withheld the challenge of team-mate Lewis Hamilton to move back to the top of the drivers’ standings with victory in the Monaco GP. The German led from the start as Hamilton secured second but the relationship between the Mercedes drivers remains frosty.
Lancaster left with a lot on his plate
England coach Stuart Lancaster was given food for thought as he watched Toulon beat Saracens in the Heineken Cup final. Owen Farrell (ankle) and Mako Vunipola (knee) ended the game crocked, while Steffon Armitage impressed for the French victors.
McIlroy storms back to take PGA title
Former world No 1 Rory McIlroy overcame a troubled week to take the PGA Championship at Wentworth yesterday. The Ulsterman, who split with partner Caroline Wozniacki before the tournament, beat Shane Lowry by a shot as Thomas Bjorn had a poor final day.
Marvellous finish gives O’Brien cheer
Aidan O’Brien put a difficult spring behind him as his horse, Marvellous, took the Irish 1,000 Guineas after a strong finish at the Curragh. Lightning Thunder finished second, but O’Brien’s filly is now one of the favourites for next week’s Oaks.
Bale on Cup goal
“It’s hard to describe what I felt like when the ball went in,” Gareth Bale said after scoring in the Champions League final. “Seeing all the fans and players run towards me was an amazing feeling.”
Rotherham beat Orient on penalties
Rotherham United will play in the Championship next season after coming back from 2-0 down to beat Leyton Orient on penalties in yesterday’s League One play-off final. Alex Revell scored twice to take the tie to extra time before the Millers prevailed 4-3 from the spot.
Hibs sent down by happy Hamilton
Hibernian will join Rangers and Hearts in the Scottish Championship next season after losing on penalties to Hamilton in the Premiership play-off. The Accies won 2-0 at Easter Road to level the tie before prevailing 4-3 in the shoot-out.
