Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

World no 1 Robertson had eased past Ali Carter and Ronnie O’Sullivan but struggled from the start against Murphy, trailing 5-0.
Murphy had two 127 breaks and four more over 60 as he added to his 2005 World Championship and 2008 UK Championship.

Vonn equals Möser-Proll’s win record
Lindsey Vonn matched the World Cup’s all-time record for wins yesterday. She skied through thick fog and soft snow to win a demanding downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo and tie Annemarie Moser-Pröll’s 35-year-old record of 62 World Cup victories, capping a comeback from two knee surgeries that kept her out of last year’s Sochi Olympics.
“Lindsey made history today,” said US Alpine director Patrick Riml. “She’s the greatest skier in the world and she will be for a long time.”
At the finish, Vonn collapsed to the snow in a scene of relief, then used her ski poles to pick herself back up, flashed a big smile and received a hug from overall World Cup leader Tina Maze, who finished fifth.
Vonn was on track to smash the record two years ago before she crashed at the world championships and tore up her right knee, requiring serious surgery. She attempted to return for Sochi but re-injured her knee two months before the games and had to have surgery again.
