Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

‘Four-man’ bob may alter with women’s entry
The four-man bobsleigh may have to be renamed after the sport’s world body announced a ground-breaking move to allow women to compete alongside men in mixed gender teams.
“We follow the spirit and movements of our time. There is a strong belief in the FIBT that men and women can compete together in four-man,” said International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing federation president Ivo Ferriani.
An FIBT spokeswoman said mixed teams would have to qualify for events in the normal way but could compete in the World Cup and other events. There would also be nothing to stop all-women teams competing.
Poulter: my kids get scared at that pic
Ian Poulter’s passion for the Ryder Cup has endeared him to the European team, and he says even his children are frightened by that image of him celebrating wildly at Medinah in 2012. Asked if they were amazed at that sight, Poulter said: “No, I think they’re scared.” He is also flattered at being singled out by US captain Tom Watson as their main target. “For Tom to say that is amazing,” Poulter said.

Martin Johnson has defended his spell as England’s manager, especially their disastrous 2011 World Cup, saying the coverage of the infamous drunken night out in Queenstown was distorted. “It wasn’t actually a true reflection, but you’re fighting a tidal wave at that point,” Johnson said.
