Holders Seville remain on track for a fourth Europa League title in nine years after Kevin Gameiro’s late strike earned a 2-2 draw in last night’s quarter-final second leg at Zenit and a 4-3 aggregate win . Fiorentina beat Dynamo Kiev 2-0 and are joined by Napoli – who overcame Wolfsburg – in today’s semi-final draw. Dnipro beat Bruges 1-0 to complete the last four.
Anderson a doubt for England tour
New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson will have to recover from a broken finger if he is to play in the Test series against England, starting next month.
The all-rounder, who has 10 Test caps, is to miss the remainder of the Indian Premier League season after suffering the injury with Mumbai Indians. Adam Milne, the seamer, is also out injured.
Big four opt out of flagship event
Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey will miss next month’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Their decision not to play in the European Tour’s flagship event comes as a big blow to the organisers. Ernie Els has masterminded major alterations to Wentworth in recent years which have not met with unanimous player approval.
Maloney back in promotion game
Kellie Maloney, who went public last August with the news that she was transitioning genders, has returned to boxing promotion by taking on two fighters.
Maloney is resuming a career that saw Lennox Lewis guided to world heavyweight titles in the 1990s. Under her previous name, Frank, she called time on a 30-year career in October 2013, after growing disillusioned.
Maloney also took Paul Ingle and Scott Harrison to world titles.
Her latest fighters – Gary Cornish, 28, from Inverness, and Tony Jones, 23, from Telford, Shropshire – were unveiled at a press conference in London.
Maloney said: “If I put it in football terms, I’ve been the manager of Manchester United and now I’m going to start managing Nuneaton Borough.”
Former Everton chair Carter dies
Former Everton chairman Sir Philip Carter has died aged 87.
Carter also served as president of the Football League and a vice-president of the Football Association. Under his stewardship in the 1980s, the club won two league titles, an FA Cup in 1984 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following year against Rapid Vienna.
