Van driver remanded on murder charge

A van driver charged with murdering a woman and trying to kill 13 other pedestrians, including seven children, in a hit-and-run rampage appeared in court yesterday. Matthew Tvrdon, 31, is accused of deliberately driving into parents and young children during 30 minutes of mayhem in Cardiff on Friday afternoon. District Judge Bodfan Jenkins remanded him in custody.

1,444 police names on investigation list

The names of 1,444 former and serving police officers have been passed to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as part of its investigation into the Hillsborough disaster. The government said the number showed the "enormity" of the investigation. MORE

Tuition fees 'putting off postgraduates'

Higher tuition fees and lack of money are likely to put graduates off continuing their studies, contributing to a skill shortage in the UK, a report warns. Universities are increasingly geared towards attracting international postgraduate students, it says.

Scientists jailed over deadly earthquake

An Italian court has handed down six-year jail sentences to six scientists and a senior government official for failing to properly communicate the risk of the deadly L'Aquila earthquake. The leader of the English Defence League was remanded in custody until the New Year yesterday accused of travelling to the United States last month using another person's passport. Stephen Lennon, 29, was remanded in custody.

Pussy Riot pair sent to remote prisons

Two members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot have been sent to prison colonies far from Moscow despite the women's lawyers arguing that they should be allowed to remain in jail in Moscow to be closer to their small children. They also cited health and safety concerns at far-flung penal colonies. MORE

Trio 'stole £330,000 meant for troops'

Three men kept £330,000 in public donations to injured service personnel, a jury heard. William Knight, 51, John Wadsworth, 46, and Patrick Jarrett, 49, deny pocketing the proceeds of raffle tickets sold for the Wounded Warrior Project. The case continues at Preston Crown Court.

Boyle delighted with £54,000 libel victory

Frankie Boyle said he was "very happy" after winning £54,000 in libel damages from the Daily Mirror, which described him as a "racist comedian" who was "forced to quit" the BBC's Mock The Week. MORE

Billy Graham backs Romney's challenge

America's most famous preacher, Billy Graham, is backing Mitt Romney for the White House. The televangelist published an advertisement offering what amounted to an endorsement of the Republican. Graham, 93, also toned down his criticism of Mr Romney's Mormon faith which he once called a "cult". MORE

Café offers one hump or two

A café in Dubai, trying to give a modern twist to an old Bedouin tradition, has started putting camel products on its menu. Cafe2Go, launched in September last year by an Emirati entrepreneur as part of a scheme to revive Bedouin traditions, now features camel-cinos and camel-meat fajitas. Camel milk is an Arab staple.

Army warns nation is 'on the edge'

Security forces warned that the fate of the nation is "on the edge" after the assassination of a spy chief set off a cycle of violence underpinned by simmering sectarian tensions. The army said it would take "decisive measures" to maintain the country's stability as gun battles raged in Beirut. MORE

An age discrimination case brought by a pilot against Michael Jeffries, the head of the fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch, has revealed some interesting details: cabin crew aboard Mr Jeffries' corporate jet were required to wear a specific cologne and seat his three dogs in a particular order. Gove says sorry for being a 'clever Dick'

It may be 30 years too late, but Michael Gove apologised to his former French teacher today for misbehaving in class. In an open letter, the Education Secretary said he cringes when he remembers his 15-year-old self, lurking at the back of the classroom, competing to ask "clever-Dick questions". MORE

Armed response cuts ocean piracy

Worldwide sea piracy has fallen to its lowest level in four years, the International Maritime Bureau says, with attacks off the coast of Somalia falling sharply. In the past 18 months armed guards have been placed on many cargo ships and the US and EU have stepped up their naval presence.

Hyde Park gigs in jeopardy

The future of concerts in Hyde Park is in doubt after noise restrictions reportedly forced the world's largest live-music company to pull out of the bidding. Live Nation withdrew its offer, saying that the bidding process was "flawed". A duet by Bruce Springsteen and Sir Paul McCartney, below, at the park was cut short this year.
