Acrobats injured in platform collapse
A platform collapsed during a circus acrobatic act yesterday, sending eight performers plunging to the ground. Nine people were seriously injured in the accident. The women fell up to 40ft at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey show in Providence, Rhode Island.
Firemen strike over pensions dispute
Firefighters staged a third day of strikes yesterday over their pensions dispute. Members of the Fire Brigades Union in England and Wales walked out at 10am for five hours following stoppages on Friday and Saturday. Fire authorities made alternative arrangements for cover.
Pro-Russians storm Odessa police HQ
Hundreds of pro-Russian demonstrators stormed the police headquarters in Odessa yesterday and won the release of dozens detained after deadly clashes in the Ukrainian port city. More than 40 people died – most of them pro-Russian – in riots and a fire on Friday.
Le Pen threatens to block new EU laws
The far-right leader Marine Le Pen has threatened to block new EU legislation if this month’s European elections bring her National Front party the number of MEPs it expects – giving it ta “blocking minority”.
Cancer professor calls for age triage
A cancer specialist has called for expensive drugs to be given to younger patients before older sufferers. Professor Karol Sikora, a former director of cancer services at Hammersmith Hospital in west London, said age should be a factor when allocating drugs on a limited budget. “Age should be taken into account when comparing the potential benefits,” he said.
‘Vampire therapy’ rejuvenates mice
An infusion of young blood can reverse signs of ageing, researchers say. Scientists who experimented on mice believe young blood may contain natural chemicals that rejuvenate the ageing brain. The “vampire therapy” improved the performance of the elderly mice in tests. page 20
Train derailment leaves 19 dead
At least 19 people were killed and 130 injured when a passenger train derailed in western India yesterday. The accident took place at Raigad, about 100km (60 miles) south of Mumbai, when the engine and some of the coaches of the train came off the tracks. The cause is unknown.
Great views, long walk to the shops
A mountain has been put up for sale as its owner tries to pay off a hefty tax bill. The asking price for Blencathra, a 2,850ft (868m) peak in the Lake District, is £1.75m. The Earl of Lonsdale, Hugh Lowther, owes HMRC a reported £9m.
Makeover for White Horse of Uffington
More than 100 volunteers took turns yesterday restoring the 3,000-year-old White Horse of Uffington in Oxfordshire. The 110m-long Bronze Age figure, 2.5km south of the village of Uffington, is re-chalked once a year to keep it white.
NYPD blues as thieves strike van
Police baseball club New York’s Finest had to fill out crime reports instead of taking to the field, after equipment worth about £9,000 was stolen from the team van.
Airline provides suites with butlers
Etihad Airways is equipping aircraft with 125 sq ft hotel-style suites with dedicated butlers. The “apartments” have king-sized beds and private bathrooms.
