Charles blasts global warming sceptics

The Prince of Wales has launched an attack on climate-change sceptics, and urged world leaders to take a united, global approach to seeking a solution. In a pre-recorded speech to a UN conference in Brazil, he criticised the "sceptical reluctance to engage with the critical issues of our day".

Reactors order for UK nuclear subs

The Government will today announce the £1bn contract for reactors to power the next generation of Britain's nuclear submarines. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond stressed that no final decision on Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent will be made for another four years. MORE

Rodney King dies in swimming pool

Rodney King, who symbolised racial tensions after his 1991 beating by police sparked mass rioting, has been found dead in a swimming pool, police said. The police said there were no signs of foul play. MORE

Election win will boost Hollande

French President François Hollande's Socialist Party has won a solid majority of seats in the lower house of parliament, according to polling agencies. The win will help Mr Hollande pass tax and spending increases, and bolster his drive for EU stimulus measures. MORE

Science journals to offer free content

Scientific papers are to be available free online in a Government-backed project to open up knowledge at the expense of Britain's academic publishers. The Coalition plans to stop publicly funded research going behind the paywalls of the scientific journals. MORE

Troops escalate shelling of Homs

Syrian troops intensified shelling of rebel-held neighbourhoods in Homs yesterday. Activists said humanitarian conditions in the city were growing dire and pressed for the evacuation of 1,000 families. Homs has been under siege for more than a week, part of a major escalation of violence around the country that forced the 300-strong UN observer force to call off its patrols. MORE

British soldier killed in Helmand named

A British soldier killed during an operation targeting insurgents in Afghanistan has been named as Corporal Alex Guy from the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment. Cpl Guy, 37, was killed on Friday while leading his section to assist a group of Afghan soldiers pinned down by enemy fire in Helmand Province.

Disabled man seeks landmark ruling

A severely disabled man with locked-in syndrome will endeavour to change euthanasia laws this week by convincing the High Court that any doctor who helps him to die should not face criminal charges. Tony Nicklinson is asking judges to extend the common law of "necessity" to assisted suicide and murder. MORE

Cheryl calls timeon Barlow's reign

Cheryl Cole has scored the fastest-selling single of the year, storming straight to the top of the charts with "Call My Name". The song sold 152,000 copies in its first week, ending the two-week reign of Garry Barlow's Jubilee anthem "Sing".

Voters reject call for more referendums

Voters rejected plans for referendums on new international treaties. A nationalist group wanted voters to have an automatic say whenever the government signs any important international deal. But 75.2 percent of voters rejected the plan. MORE

Burma's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will jet in to Dublin today. Thousands of supporters are due to turn out to see the Nobel Peace Prize laureate deliver an address and receive the freedom of Dublin city.

Ozzy: My son has multiple sclerosis

Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon have revealed that their son Jack, 26, has multiple sclerosis. He was diagnosed after losing 60 per cent of the vision in his right eye.
