Police used pepper spray and tear gas to break up an anti-Japan protest in southern China yesterday as demonstrators took to the streets in scores of cities. The protests followed Japan's decision last week to buy the disputed islands which Tokyo calls the Senkaku and Beijing calls the Diaoyu and which could contain valuable gas reserves. MORE

British soldiers among six killed
Afghan forces – or insurgents dressed in their uniforms – killed six Nato troops in two separate attacks at the weekend. Criminal charges sought for Kate pics
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are to make a criminal complaint against the photographer who took topless pictures of her, St James's Palace said last night. Lawyers will present the complaint to the French prosecutor today. The couple want the photographer or photographers to be charged for invading their privacy. MORE

Actor and anti-phone hacking campaigner Hugh Grant is predicting that Lord Justice Leveson will advocate the introduction of an independent news regulator in his recommendations on future press regulation, with the media and general public splitting into two camps in response. MORE
Slurry victims were trying to save pet
Two senior health and safety executives were yesterday probing the deaths of 22-year-old Ulster rugby player Nevin Spence, his brother Graham, 30, and father Noel, 52, at the family home near Hillsborough in County Down, Northern Ireland on Saturday evening. It is thought all three men died after an attempt to save a pet dog from a slurry tank. MORE
Hockey-stick cop scores an own goal
A senior police officer who had been overseeing a crackdown on Mumbai's unlicensed and illegal bars and clubs while personally brandishing a hockey stick has been transferred amid fears the operation was damaging Mumbai's reputation. MORE
