More than a quarter of children are unable to spell words such as “boiled”, “chief”, “future” and “surprised”, a new spelling test has shown. Ministers claimed the results were a vindication of their decision to introduce the new test as part of the national curriculum SATs exams for 11-year-olds in English and maths.

Six officers face misconduct inquiry
Six police officers are under investigation for gross misconduct after the death of a disabled man in Bristol. Bijan Ebrahimi was found alight in Brislington after allegedly being seriously assaulted in July. The IPCC said the six had been served with notices of gross misconduct.
Editor forced to flee after death threats
A journalist at a Sri Lankan newspaper known for antagonising the government has been forced to leave the country following death threats and an attack on her home. Mandana Ismail Abeywickrema, an associate editor of the Sunday Leader, left this week for an undisclosed country.
Court of Protection ‘should go public’
More cases heard by the Court of Protection should be made public, the senior judge in charge of the court said yesterday. Mr Justice Charles revealed that new guidance will soon be published telling judges when and how to publish their rulings.

Funeral turns into anti-fascist rally
Hundreds of mourners threw flowers and chanted anti-fascist slogans yesterday during the funeral of Pavlos Fyssas, a 34-year-old hip-hop and rap singer, stabbed to death in a killing blamed on a member of the extreme right-wing Golden Dawn party. Ministers ‘misled MPs over arms deals’
Foreign Secretary William Hague and Defence Secretary Philip Hammond are among ministers accused of “misleading” MPs about Britain’s arms exports. MPs have demanded an explanation as to why export licences were granted for arms to be sent to countries with questionable human-rights records. MORE
