Microsoft has reported its first quarterly loss, blaming an accounting adjustment to reflect a weak online advertising business. It paid $6.3bn for aQuantive, only to see Google expand its share of the online ad market, prompting a $492m loss in the April to June quarter.

RAF helicopter in crash landing
An RAF helicopter crash landed in a field after apparently hitting power lines close to the seaside resort of Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, the MoD confirmed last night. Six air crew and passengers on board were unhurt but the aircraft sustained damage.

George Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch volunteer charged with killing Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, wants to apologise to his victim's parents but insists the incident was all part of "God's plan".

The honeymoon for François Hollande appears to be ending as he tries to deal with an announcement from Peugeot Citroen that it is cutting 8,000 jobs. Mr Hollande's ratings started to fall after an EU treaty on fiscal rules was made without changing the constitution. MORE
Supermarket summit over milk
Supermarkets have been called to a Government summit over plummeting milk prices as dairy farmers threaten to bring supplies to a standstill. Chefs Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall called for shoppers to boycott grocers who pay below the cost of production. MORE

At least 68 dead in ferry disaster
Rescue workers fought rough seas yesterday to search for survivors after a ferry sank near the Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar. At least 68 people were confirmed dead and 145 were rescued after the craft capsized near Chumbe island.
Barack's bachelor pad up for rent
The New York apartment where Barack Obama lived in the 1980s is available for rent. The website listing states: "Live Like the President!!!" But a Citi Habitats broker listing the apartment this week told the Wall Street Journal the apartment was just "a typical walk-up".
Teen gets stuck in child's swing
A teenager had to be cut free after becoming trapped in a child's swing. The 18-year-old woman was rescued by five firefighters using bolt-cutters after she got stuck at a play park in Edinburgh. She was uninjured.
Student's game show may strike it rich
A student's idea for a "psychological game show" could be heading to TV after Warner Brothers picked it up. Sean O'Riordan created Newton's Law as a project at the National Film and Television School in London. He said: "It's about how far you'd go for the other person in your life."
More than 1,500 turtles escape farm
More than 1,500 turtles have made a slow-speed escape from their farm in the US. Turtle farmer David Driver told sheriff's officials he suspects vandals are to blame for tearing down fences around his turtle ponds, allowing the turtles to make a beeline to nearby ponds and creeks.

Voting booths for expats doubled
The government has doubled the number of overseas polling stations for a referendum it hopes will impeach President Traian Basescu for overstepping his powers, after a court ruled that more than half the electorate needed to vote on 29 July for the result to be valid.
Two climbers finish 'unclimbed' route
Two Scottish climbers have completed what has been described as the last great unclimbed route in the Himalayas. Rick Allen, from Aberdeen, and Sandy Allan, from Newtonmore, ascended the peak of Nanga Parbat in Pakistan via the Mazeno Ridge on Sunday.
Ice-T raps new wave of hip-hop artists
Rap superstar Ice-T has criticised the state of the rap music scene. Launching his directorial film debut in London last night, the 54-year-old said he was unimpressed with today's hip-hop artists, saying: "It's just pop. It lacks concept – most tracks are about clubbing and partying."
Sleepy hamlet owed fortune by Berlin
The hamlet of Mittenwalde could become rich if Berlin were to repay it an outstanding debt that dates back to 1562. A certificate of debt attests that Mittenwalde lent Berlin 400 guilders on May 28 1562, to be repaid with six per cent interest per year. That would amount to €112m today.
