'Anti-gay' posters banned from buses

Adverts which suggested gay people could be cured have been banned from London buses, transport chiefs said last night. The campaign by Christian group Core Issues Trust, due to run for two weeks, was blocked following a public outcry which labelled the ads homophobic. MORE

Trayvon killer in court for first time

The man who shot and killed the unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin almost seven weeks ago appeared in court for the first time last night charged with second-degree murder. In the brief hearing, George Zimmerman did not enter a plea or request bail. MORE

Cameron considers easing sanctions

Sanctions on Burma should be eased if the country continues to move towards democracy, David Cameron has said. But the Prime Minister, who is visiting the country today, claimed he wanted to see the situation for himself before backing any relaxation. Wallis PR contract 'blurred boundaries'

The senior officers in the Metropolitan Police who employed Neil Wallis, the former deputy editor of the News of the World, as a PR consultant were guilty of "imprudent decisions and poor judgement," the Independent Police Complaints Commission has found. His job is said to have "blurred professional boundaries". MORE

Incest couple lose European Court case

The European Court of Human Rights ruled yesterday that German courts did not violate a Leipzig man's rights by convicting him for incest with his younger sister, with whom he has fathered four children. Patrick Stuebing, who was was sentenced to 14 months in prison in 2005, claimed his rights to private and family life were violated. MORE

A hundred years after the Titanic sank, two Swedish researchers say when it comes to sinking ships, male chivalry is "a myth". Their analysis of 18 of the most famous maritime disasters showed that of the 15,000 people who died, only 17.8 per cent of the women survived compared with 34.5 per cent of the men.

Prima ballerina lands job as director

Royal Ballet prima ballerina Tamara Rojo has been named artistic director of the English National Ballet. The decision has puzzled some experts, as Ms Rojo is 37 years old and thought to be at her peak as a dancer, as well as a major box-office draw. The first ballet under her directorship will be The Sleeping Beauty.

Giant spud hits back at the diet gurus

A six-ton replica potato is on a coast-to-coast US promotional tour after diet gurus attacked the tuber for its carbohydrate content. The metal and cement model is the Idaho Potato Commission's way of celebrating 75 years of marketing the potassium-rich product that put Idaho on the map.

Rowling elects to go down different road

Author JK Rowling has announced the title of her first novel since the end of the Harry Potter series. The Casual Vacancy, written for adults, will be released on 27 September. The book follows parish-council elections in an English market town. Bookshops welcomed the news, saying it would "obviously be a major best-seller".

KFC says sorry for tsunami message

KFC Thailand has apologised for posting a Facebook message urging people to rush home during Wednesday's tsunami scare and order a bucket of chicken. The company posted this message: "Let's hurry home and follow the earthquake news. And don't forget to order your favourite KFC menu."

Be afraid... of missing a classic

One of only four versions of Edvard Munch's masterpiece The Scream has gone on display in London for the first time. The artwork is being hung at Sotheby's for just one week before it goes on sale in New York in May. The auction house has placed an estimate of $80m (£50m) on the painting – its highest valuation in history.
