Sex row school gets new head
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Dulwich College has appointed a headmaster to replace Antony Verity, who left after being suspended over unfounded allegations of sexual harassment. The appointment of Graham Able, 48, head of Hampton School, Middlesex, was greeted with relief yesterday by parents who wanted an external candidate brought in to heal rifts that still exist among staff.
Mr Verity, 56, was suspended in September when his assistant, Anne Ridley, made allegations about his behaviour which were eventually labelled "sexual" because his hand allegedly once brushed hers.
Mr Verity was cleared by governors of sexually harassing Ms Ridley, but had to resign because his position had become untenable. The row caused acrimony among staff, parents and governors.
Christopher Field, the acting head, was among applicants for the post, but some parents felt his appointment would be divisive, as he had been involved in the inquiry into the allegations against Mr Verity.
Mr Able, a former deputy head of Barnard Castle in Co Durham, graduated in natural sciences at Trinity College, Cambridge. He is married and has a son and daughter.
