For a nation that has an insatiable appetite for cookery shows, from the Great British Bake Off to Come Dine With Me, the footage below is sure to captivate.
Cristoforetti prepared one of her favourite meals in space - chicken turmeric with champignon mushrooms, brown rice and peas.
The footage demonstrates the difficulty of cooking in zero-gravity. The Italian astronaut filled a tortilla with various pouches of food, making sure to pack each ingredient into the previous one, in order to stop her masterpiece from floating away.
During the segment, she admits “it’s not too bad, considering we’re in weightlessness”. The video concludes in a taste-test, with the chef giving an approving thumbs up.
Cristoforetti is currently on board the International Space Station for a six-month mission called Futura. On these missions, astronauts are provided with comfort foods for psychological reasons.
