Rugby League club chairmen voted last night to reduce the number of teams in the new Rupert Murdoch-backed Super League from 14 to 12. Under the new format there will be a First Division of 11 clubs and a Second Division of 10. There will also be no need to go ahead with the controversial mergers which had been proposed.
Damon Hill, of Britain, went to the top of the Formula One world drivers' championship when he won the San Marino Grand Prix.
Britain's tennis team lost 5-0 to the Slovak Republic and now face a relegation play-off against Monaco in July.
Blackburn Rovers missed the chance to go 11 points clear at the top of the Premiership when they lost 2-0 to West Ham.
