Prison officers in bribery inquiry
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Scotland Yard is investigating claims that they smuggled in mobile phones, helped some prisoners to avoid unwelcome work duties and helped others to move to a relaxed wing. The three suspended officers are said to have accepted cash and gifts from friends and relatives of prisoners.
Two of the officers were relieved of their duties last Monday and the third two days later after statements from an inmate serving life. Officers are also believed to have arranged transfers to open prisons.
Scotland Yard said "allegations of dishonesty" among Brixton staff were being investigated but refused to give details.
The suspensions came days after 22 officers at Wormwood Scrubs were charged with assaulting inmates. Last month Sir David Ramsbotham, the chief inspector of prisons, revealed that governors and managers had spent years "turning a blind eye" to bullying at the west London jail.
Jack Straw, the Home Secretary, described the treatment meted out to inmates as "evil".
