Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.ONE OF the presenters of television's Two Fat Ladies was last night elected Rector of the University of Aberdeen.
Reformed alcoholic and former barrister Clarissa Dickson Wright, 51, was elected after three recounts.
Ms Dickson Wright was not at the election count, as she was at a London book-signing, but speaking via a student supporter with a mobile phone, she said: "I am very happy and looking forward to getting on with the job." She promised to fight tuition fees, push for a bar on campus and seek to lower "horrendous" bus fares paid by students. In her election address she said: "Having been to university myself and experienced life as a student, I fully appreciate the difficulties you are facing." She won with 941 votes to her nearest rival, former Royal Marines Major Richard Eccles, who polled 718. She also beat former Scotsman editor Magnus Linklater.
The election for the historic role was called after the death of the Scottish National Party's Allan Macartney, who was former Rector and MEP for North East Scotland.
