From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Like many long-suffering couples in the public eye, his relationship with Jada Pinkett Smith is so often the subject of tabloid speculation that the Suicide Squad actor rarely responds to rumours. However, on this occasion Smith said he chose to respond to “foolishness” to quash the messages of condolences he had received about his reported “split”.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Smith told his 74 million followers: “In the interest of redundant, repetitious, over and over-again-ness... Jada and I are …. NOT GETTING A DIVORCE!”
“I promise you all - if I ever decide to divorce my Queen - I SWEAR I'll tell you myself!”
Pinkett Smith followed up his statement with a more concise response.
Pinkett Smith has been more forthcoming about their relationship and recently addressed long-running claims she and her husband have an open relationship.
The Magic Mike XXL actress told Howard Stern in June that Smith is free to do as he pleases, providing he can look in the mirror at himself afterwards "and be ok".
“Here is what’s real - I'm not the kind of woman that believes a man is not going to be attracted to other women. I'm just not that girl. It's just not realistic,” she said.
"And just because your man is attracted to another woman, does not mean he doesn't love you! And it doesn't mean he's gonna act on it. If your man can’t really see another woman's beauty, how the hell is he gonna see yours?"
