From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

“It’s unbelievable,” Mario Götze declared, after striking the winning World Cup goal in extra time that secured the fourth title for Germany.

“I scored but I didn’t really know what was happening,” he continued. “A dream has become a reality and we are going to have a great party. It is absolutely sensational.”

True to his words, his life on the pitch, as an attacking Bayern Munich midfielder, and now an international hero, is pretty sweet. At just 22, he earns more than €7million a year. And he has been heralded by German manager Joachim Löw as a “miracle boy” after half-volleying a strike past Argentina keeper Sergio Romero.

“A boy wonder,” Löw went on. “He can play any position up front. I know he’s always able to decide a match, and it was a great winner he scored.”

And, the eagle-eyed viewers at home were quick to point out as his German lingerie model girlfriend bounded into the stadium to congratulate him, his life away from the pitch isn’t too shabby either.

It took Twitter all of a minute to be absolutely infatuated with the German student, 24, who, once all the ‘phwoar’s and ‘cor blimey’s and other crass declarations of lust had died down, happened to have a name. And that name was Ann-Kathrin Brömmel – the 'happiest WAG ot the World Cup'.

Her relationship with Götze became national news in Germany thanks to a slightly perverse long-lens camera shot…

The Deutsch tabloids fell over themselves to score images of Ann-Kathrin and Mario in a compromising position on a yacht in Ibiza in 2012. They resulted in, some, erm, rather embarrassing images of Götze that he’s probably wishing he could erase from the internet forever. And definitely won’t be opting for skin-tight Speedos in the future.

This was slightly annoying for her, because she doesn’t want to be known as Mario Götze’s girlfriend…

“Someone whose purpose in life it is to be the wife of someone I can not understand,” she told German GQ in September 2013. "Although I am also the girlfriend of Mario Gotze, but I have my own personal goals I want to achieve. Otherwise I could not be more happy.”

She has personal goals like going to Australia and becoming a Victoria’s Secret model…

Both of which seem entirely achievable. The former more so than the latter. Though the latter might be slightly more difficult if this audition for Germany’s Next Top Model from 2012 is anything to go by. Although she did make Heidi Klum’s final 50: Rumour has it that she’s signed to International Model Management…

Who are based in London. But we called them earlier and can confirm – they’ve never heard of her.

She’s released two pop singles in 2010 under the guise of ‘Trina B’…

Kind of like the German Gina G. But, you know. Not as good: Luckily, music is more of a hobby of hers than a career direction…

“I sing because I enjoy it,” she told GQ. “And not because I have a voice like Beyoncé.”

Well observed.

Even more luckily, as she’s got a terrible taste in music…

“Completely in love with James Arthur at the moment,” she told one fan in an online Q&A. Well, someone’s got to.

She’s not above the odd internship…

Last year, she apparently did some work experience at Emmerich publication FP Editor, where she wrote about fashion, music and travel. It’s all in German, though, so we’ve no idea if it’s any good or not. Probably better than her singles.

She ruddy loves Harry Potter…

There’s just something about round, school boyish faces, millions of pounds and international acclaim that really seems to do it for her. She also thinks Hermione Grainger is cool. Again. Someone’s got to.

She’s a strident atheist, though doesn’t explain why…

Asked by one follower if she believed in God, she replied with a firmly punctuated: “No.”

She found the saddest man at the World Cup and nicked his trophy…

You know the Brazilian guy seen looking forlorn in the crowd as he cradled his mock-up globe while watching his team getting hammered a mammoth 7-1 by the Germans in the semi-finals? Well, she tracked him down. And posted this hours before the final. The girl on the left is André Schurrle’s girlfriend, Montana Yorke.

She’s changed her mind… It’s not so bad being Mario Götze’s girlfriend after all…

If her “official blog” is indeed as “official” as it declares itself to be, then she even lists “Mario Götze’s girlfriend” alongside “singer” and “model” in her job descriptions.

Just after Germany were crowned the World Cup champions, a post appeared that also declared her the 'happiest WAG ot the World Cup' [sic’]. “Her boy friend[sic] Mario Götze scored a goal and made Germany champion of the World,” it continued.

Though she might have been a tad concerned to see this emerge on her Twitter feed:
