From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It would have been a cop-out if Obama had appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and not gone through the humbling experience of reading out mean tweets like the other guests.

It seems he was only too happy to oblige though, and took part in the segment with gusto, reading tweets criticising his hair, his inefficacy as a president, his economic policies and even his jeans.

Sure, they were a little cleaner and less cutting than usual, but the President still took the criticisms like a good sport.

"Is there any way we could fly Obama to some golf course halfway around the world and just leave him there?" @RWSurferGirl wrote, who was delighted that her tweet made the cut:

"I knew I'd get my 15 minutes of fame someday #ThanksObama" another mean tweeter said.

Previous celebrities to have featured in the segment include Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Lena Dunham, Julia Roberts and Lil Wayne.

Obama seems to kicking back for the tail end of his presidency, also taking selfies for BuzzFeed and home-brewing beer.
