From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Tom Hanks has expressed his gratitude to a stranger who returned his lost credit card, giving everyone further proof that he is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.

The actor took to Twitter to thank "Tony", a New Yorker who gave it back after finding it on the street.

The 58-year old wrote: "A guy named Tony found my credit card on the street in NYC and returned it! Tony! You make this city even greater! Thanx. HANX."

Hanks is well-known for being one of Hollywood’s more approachable stars.

In February it was reported that he surprised a group of Girl Scout in San Francisco when he stopped to buy some of their cookies, donated an addition $20 and offered to have his photo taken with people who recognised him… as long as they bought some cookies as well.

Archana Appanna, whose daughter was one of the Scouts, told the Los Altos Town Crier she was "still on cloud nine".

"He was so personable," she said. "So down to earth."

Hanks is famous for his roles in films such as Saving Mr Banks, Forrest Gump, The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can and Captain Phillips. He recently starred in Carly Rae Jepsen's latest single 'I Really Like You'.
