From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Tom Daley has confirmed what many had long suspected – he is gay, not bisexual as he first said when he came out on YouTube in December last year.
When asked my Keith Lemon on ITV2’s Celebrity Juice whether or not he was gay, he said, “I am.”
So sorry girls, he might have said that “I still fancy girls” in his original announcement, but he’s since changed his mind. Or maybe his PR machine relented, either way.
“I came out on YouTube as I wanted to say what I wanted to say without anyone twisting it,” he said.
“I told my family before I told the world. I was terrified.
“I did not know what the reaction was going to be. I did it on YouTube because people were constantly digging and asking questions.”
The 19-year-old Olympic diving medallist – who won bronze in the men's 10-metre platform event at London 2012 - said that the reaction to the announcement has so far been positive.
“Two days later after I posted the video, I was on my way to Houston to a training camp and this old lady comes up to me in a wheelchair, and wheels over and says, ‘I would like to say thank you. You inspired my son to be able to tell me he was gay.’ I was like, ‘Oh wow’ and then she goes, ‘But he is married with three kids!’ I was like, ‘Have a nice flight,’” he said.
Daley is one of the few sportsmen to have publicly revealed that they are gay or bisexual – particularly at the peak of their careers. He is currently in a relationship with 39-year-old Oscar-winning screenwriter and gay rights activist Dustin Lance Black, which he described as “all good”.
“We don’t all sit down and write down each other’s names – it is not like the AA,” he said.
“It should not really matter. Nobody should care. It is not what people like and don’t like, they should mind their own business.”
In addition to his diving talent show Splash!, Daley is soon to present an ITV2 travel series, entitled Tom Daley Takes On The World.
