From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Rest easy Scotland, you have a new champion of your nation in the form of multi-award winning singer Taylor Swift.

The 25-year-old artist, currently beieved to be dating Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, posted a celebratory 4th July photograph on Instagram last night captioned: “Friendly relations between Scotland and America.”

Calvin and Swift, who overtook Beyoncé and Jay-Z as the highest earning couple in the music industry last month, are a prominent social media presence.

Both devoted Instagram users (although Swift’s output tends to far exceed Harris’s) fans have been enjoying a recent deluge of pictures showcasing their seemingly enviable life.

It’s hardly the first time Swift has posted about her affection for the cold, rain-drenched nation to the north of England.

Performing a gig in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro stadium as she kicked off her UK leg of her 1989 world tour earlier this year, she told an ecstatic crowd she was “one of you”.

“So I am one of you, and I’m proud because this crowd is amazing,” she told her fans, recounting an email her father sent her earlier that week explaining the Swift family originated from Scotland. She also told the crowd: “I happen to love Scottish people, personally”.
