The 93-year-old was rushed to hospital and is currently in a stable condition at the Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Hashomer, where he is receiving medical treatment, the BBC reported.
Mr Peres has been hospitalised twice this year for heart problems and underwent successful minor surgery.
During a career that has spanned seven decades, Mr Peres has held almost every senior position in Israeli politics.
The veteran politician served twice as prime minister and was also president from 2007 to 2014.
Mr Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his part in the Oslo peace deal. The prize was shared with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin, the fifth Prime Minister of Israel, who was assassinated in 1995.
Current Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, took to Facebook to wish Mr Peres a speedy recovery.
“Shimon we love you and all your people wishes you get well,” he wrote.
