From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sarah Palin is back. The Republican nominee turned commentator turned reality TV contestant has finally re-emerged on a political stage to endorse someone as equally outspoken and uncontainable as herself.

As orators, Palin and Donald Trump share a number of similarities. Both have a tendency to veer off script, both demonstrate a love for hyperbole and both give memorable speeches that involve a lot of shouting.

Her speech in Iowa was no exception. The former Governor of Alaska, who holds great sway among evangelical voters, stepped forward to declare Trump the man to “kick Isis’s ass” - with “no pussy footing around”. In amongst her lashings of praise a bellowing Palin also highlighted Trump’s “quiet generosity” and “compassion” as he stood, somewhat awkwardly, to the side.

Some of her most Palin-esque quotes are below.

“Look back there in the press box! Heads are spinning, media heads are spinning…”

“Are you ready to make America great again? We all have a part in this. We all have a responsibility. Looking around at all of you, you hard-working Iowa families. You farm families, and teachers, and teamsters, and cops, and cooks. You rocking rollers. And holy rollers! All of you who work so hard. You full-time moms. You with the hands that rock the cradle.”

“He is from the private sector, not a politician - can I get a 'Hallelujah!'

“Are you ready for a commander-in-chief, for a commander-in-chief who will let our warriors do their job and go kick Isis ass?”

“Well, and then funny, ha, not funny, but now, what they’re doing is wailing: 'Well, Trump and his, uh, Trumpeters, they’re not conservative enough.' Oh my goodness gracious. What the heck would the establishment know about conservatism?"

“Where they’re fighting each other and yelling 'Allah Akbar' calling Jihad on each other’s heads for ever and ever. Like I’ve said before, let them duke it out and let Allah sort it out."

“The self-made success of his [Trump]- you know that he doesn’t get his power, his high, off OPM, other people’s money, like a lot of dopes in Washington do. They’re addicted to OPM, where they take other people’s money, and then their high is getting to redistribute it, right? […] His power, his passion, is the fabric of America. And it’s woven by work ethic and dreams and drive and faith in the Almighty, what a combination.”

“Pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, strict constitutionality. Those things that are unifying values from big cities to tiny towns, from big mountain states and the Big Apple, to the big, beautiful heartland that’s in between.”
