Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Whether he's powering up a motorbike in The Place Beyond The Pines, screaming in the rain in The Notebook, or playing a brooding police sergeant in Gangster Squad, Ryan Gosling's not known for picking that many light roles.

And his reputation as a straight-faced "serious" kind of actor was perfectly skewered by Ryan McHenry's viral video.

In "Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal", Gosling is shown in some of his most famous screen roles, turning his head away at spoonfuls of cereal.

It's almost impossible to convey why it's brilliant, the video's below.

Sadly, McHenry - who posted the video in 2013 - was diagnosed with osteosarcoma the same year, and he died on Sunday. The disease is a rare form of bone cancer, and only 530 new cases are identified each year in the UK.

McHenry was candid about his struggle with the disease, and posted videos of himself while he was receiving treatment.

Gosling proved that he had a sense of humour and pathos when he posted a Vine of himself preparing and eating a spoonful of cereal on Monday night.

He also tweeted his condolences:

A perfectly understated tribute to a funny and candid man.
