From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Robert Downey Jr has spoken about his relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker, who he was with during a period of his life while still drinking.

The pair were together for seven years, eventually splitting in 1991. Downey Jr struggled with alcohol and substance abuse before getting sober and becoming Hollywood’s highest paid actor.

“We were at a very conservative relationship considering the fact that she was normal and I was out of my mind,” he told Howard Stern on Wednesday. “I did the best I could.”

In 2008, he told Parade magazine how Parker supported him throughout their relationship. “I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn't jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is. She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn't get my act together. Private stuff aside, we were able to spend some time together, and it was really cool.”
