From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A tech mogul has accused Robert De Niro of “trash-talking” him after the actor reportedly admonished him for joking about the celebrity guests attending an innovation awards ceremony.

De Niro was at the 2015 Wall Street Journal Innovator Awards, held at the prestigious Museum of Modern Art, to present Angelina Jolie with an award on Wednesday.

The Godfather actor was reportedly angered by “condescending” comments from Stewart Butterfield, the co-founder of Flickr and the messaging app Slack, who remarked on the “supermodels and movie stars” filling the audience while accepting the “nerd award”.

“We are a long way from San Francisco,” he added, before addressing De Niro directly. “I watched ‘Godfather II’ on the plane … when you killed Don Fanucci, I liked that.”

An unimpressed De Niro had some choice words for the CEO when he took to the stage after him, according to Page Six. “Whoever the last speaker was … I thought you were a bit condescending to us actors … celebrities. I’m gonna go on record with you just to say that. And I don’t give a f** k who you are.”

Butterfield appeared unfazed by the dressing down, writing on Twitter: “I literally got trash-talked by Robert De Niro ... #lifegoals.”

In September, De Niro made headlines for shutting down a Radio Times interview because the journalist apparently used “negative inference” in her line of questioning.

‘I’m not doing this, darling,” he told her before walking out. “I think you’re very condescending.”

The Independent has contacted a representative for De Niro for comment.
