From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A former US marine has been lauded for challenging Donald Trump's provocative comments about introducing ID cards for Muslims living in America.

The controversial Republican nominee suggested he was not opposed to the idea of opening a database to register Muslims living in the US during an interview with Yahoo Politics in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Trump reportedly refused to rule out requiring Muslims to carry special ID, provoking outrage.

Former US marine Tayyib Rashid, who describes himself as a “proud Muslim marine” on his Twitter page, responded by sharing a picture of his military ID and asking Trump: “I already carry a special ID badge. Where’s yours?”

Rashid said he was a serving marine from 1997 to 2002. His tweet has been shared over 5,600 times.

Rashid spoke about his position as a Muslim and a former Marine after the Chattanooga shooting in July and said Muslims in America stood with victims and their families.

He stressed that terrorists committing brutal acts are representing their own barbarity and are nothing to do with Islam, telling Al Jazeera: “We’ve heard it over and over again. The word Islam means peace. As Muslims we have been commanded to live in peace and respect our neighbours. Islam teaches that the killing of one innocent person is the killing of all mankind.”
