Kermit The Frog was fabricated in 1955 from a second-hand woman's coat and two halves of a ping-pong ball. His big break came in 1969 when, along with his Muppet friends, he joined the cast of Sesame Street. Seven years later, The Muppet Show began, catapulting the mild-mannered frog to stardom in more than 100 countries. In a showbiz career spanning over 40 years Kermit has met the Queen, been the only frog to address students at Oxford University, and received an honorary degree from Long Island University.

What has been your biggest disappointment? Arvid Cross, Castle Cary, Somerset

I've been very fortunate. I was a little disappointed when I didn't get the Bruce Willis role in The Sixth Sense, but I got over it. I guess they really wanted someone taller than Haley Joel Osment.

Have you ever eaten a human being's legs? James Preston, by e-mail

Yech. No way.

In Hollywood there must be a shortage of ponds and swamps. Don't you ever get nostalgic cravings for your natural habitat? Lisa Amoretti, London

Sometimes. But if I ever want to remember all of the slimy creatures who live under rocks in the swamps back home, I just visit any agent or lawyer's office in Hollywood.

Do you feel you have fully grieved and mourned the loss of the late, great Jim Henson? What did Mr Henson mean to you? Nicholas E Gough, Swindon

All of the Muppets owe so much to Jim Henson. I think the best way we can honour his memory is to keep doing all of the silly things we do.

What's it like working with a bunch of Muppets? Ian Beeston, by e-mail

It takes lots of patience, and a very extensive medical insurance plan.

What kind of offspring could you envisage having with Miss Piggy? James Glasby, Edinburgh

That's the kind of question I'd rather not think about. I don't want to give Miss Piggy any ideas.

Will there be another series of The Muppet Show? Or another film? Mike Skinner, Reading

I think we will do another television show. I don't know when it will happen, so you'd better keep your television on all the time. We also have some more movies in the works.

Did you know that thousands of frogs are killed on the road annually in Britain? What advice would you give to frogs crossing roads during breeding season? Natasha Walsh, Sunbury, Surrey

My advice would be to stay home, or if you have to go out cross only at clearly marked "Frog Crossings".

Do you feel you've been typecast? Margaret Downes, Oxford

Sometimes. But I really enjoy my work. I get up each morning knowing that I'm doing something I really love. It doesn't get better than that.

Would you consider standing for the Green Party, and what is your take on environmental issues? Barry Owen, by e-mail

As far as environmental issues are concerned, I support them. If we don't protect our environment, it won't do the same for us. If I ever decide to go into politics, I think I would naturally gravitate towards the Green Party, but I live in the States, so I don't know how involved I could get.

Who was the most memorable guest on The Muppet Show? Sarah Powers, by e-mail

We did 120 Muppet Shows and every one of the guests was great. I enjoyed meeting Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy... but all of them were terrific.

What would you have done if you hadn't been in entertainment? William Casey, Liverpool

Hmm... I think I may have been a teacher. I think teachers are the most important, yet most under-appreciated people in the world. I'm lucky - in my work on Sesame Street, I've been able to entertain and teach.
