From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Duke and Duchess have formally registered the birth of their second child, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

The couple signed the birth register at Kensington Palace on Tuesday afternoon in front of a Registrar from the Westminster Register Office.

Catherine and William announced the name of their daughter on Monday. Charlotte had overtaken Alice as the bookies favourite name shortly before the Duchess went into labour in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A copy of the birth certificate listed her full name as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. It also listed Kate and William’s occupation as “Prince and Princess of the United Kingdom” - the same answer listed for both on Prince George's birth certificate.

The certificate was signed as the Queen travelled from her private estate in Norfolk to visit Kensington Palace and meet her great grandchild for the first time on Tuesday.

The Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Michael and Carole Middleton have already visited the newborn at Kensington Palace.
