From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Prince’s longtime chef has said the iconic singer spent his final months struggling with sore throats and upset stomachs for “weeks at a time” and had looked like he was losing weight.

Ray Roberts, who cooked for Prince almost every day for nearly three years, has revealed the musician was not himself in the months leading up to his death.

The musical icon died at his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota at the age of 57 on April 21. Authorities found opioid prescription medication on Prince's body and in his home and are currently investigating whether he could have died from an overdose.

“It felt like he wasn’t himself probably the last month or two,” Roberts told Associated Press. “I think he was just struggling with being sick a lot".

Roberts also said Prince had begun to look like he was losing weight and was eating less and drinking less water. He also noticed a change in the type of food he wanted to eat - favouring meals which were more digestible.

Roberts saw the Purple Rain singer the evening before he died. Although he had made Prince a roasted pepper bisque with a kale alongside a spring vegetable salad, it was never eaten. Instead, Roberts later found it in the refrigerator untouched and unmoved from where he had left it.

His personal chef also said there was “not even a hint” the singer was taking prescription drugs.

Prince ate healthily, refraining from eating meat and having a preference for light salads and soups and smoothies and fresh juices when he had a sore throat or stomach.

“I don't know if it was just an unwritten rule, but there was no meat there — ever,” he explained. “If somebody wanted to eat meat, they would have to eat it in the parking lot. And he was very serious about this.”
