John Bartholomew Widdowson, teacher and puzzle-solver, died 11 July, aged 70. An expert at crosswords, he worked under the pen name 'Bart'. Highly placed in the annual Times crossword competition, he also contributed puzzles to the Independent and the Listener. Headmaster of of Larchfield School in Helensburgh (1966-76) and Keil School in Dumbarton (1976-84), where he developed a reputation for the teaching of mathematics - a subject on which he lectured nationally.
