Obituary: Haldore Hanson

Haldore Hanson, journalist and civil servant, died Texcoco Mexico City 24 September, aged 80. A former war correspondent for the Associated Press, he lost his government post during the McCarthy era because of his writings on China - his history of the China war, Human Endeavour (1939), was pronounced as sympathetic to Mao Tse-tung's forces. Although cleared of all charges by the Civil Service Review Board, he was forced from his post as second-in- command at the Asian Development Service in 1953.
